Purpose

To improve the uptake of weight management services by families of children identified as overweight or obese.

Activity

We designed the project using research evidence on behavioural insights, and on engagement of parents/carers and children.

We drafted a completely new invitation to Energy Club sessions, using a ‘party invite’ style design. We tested it with parents/carers and children in Middleton in Rochdale Borough and then redrafted it.

The project was run with children in reception classes in three primary schools in north Middleton in Rochdale Borough, whose children had similar demographics. We ran the existing process and standard letters with a ‘control’ school, while running the alternative approach with one school (new invite sent to all children) and a third school (new invite sent only to overweight or obese children).

Impact

The pilot approach had a much more positive response from parents/carers, increased enquiries and bookings for the Energy Club, and eradicated complaints and negative pressures on staff and managers.

The detailed results and conclusions are in the Having Fun, Doing Stuff, Making Friends report.
