Purpose

To learn how dads might best be supported and enabled around speech, language and communication of their children, and to spread this learning.

Activity

We interviewed in depth eight diverse dads in Salford about their perspectives and experiences of speech, language and communication with their children. The Speaking Dadly report reflected the learning that the dads shared, including what ‘good’ would look like for them.

With clinical advice, we subsequently produced a Speaking Dadly animation for Greater Manchester, voiced by local children. This encourages dads to talk and communicate with their child from birth. The film identifies a range of ideas to incorporate language and communication into everyday activities.

The video was distributed through professionals, organisations and networks across Greater Manchester. We subsequently produced a guide for professionals about how to use the animation effectively with dads.

Impact

As well as the use of the Speaking Dadly animation across Greater Manchester, with thousands of views, the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists promoted the video both nationally and internationally as part of its influencing work.

Speaking Dadly also informed the research behind the BBC’s Tiny Happy People campaign.
