Purpose

To reimagine the economic, environmental and social purpose of town centres in a digital future, so that they are vibrant places that are frequented by more people more often and have an optimal wider impact.

Activity

We identified the variety of reasons why people might visit a town centre.

We engaged with four diverse groups of people in Eccles and Swinton, Salford: older women; people of Yemeni heritage; severely disabled people; and care experienced young adults. Each was engaged in a series of four sessions.

As reflected in the Reimagining the Purpose of Town Centres report, the local people wanted welcoming, friendly, pedestrianised town centres. For this, they collectively prioritised six themes: green spaces; safety; diversity; meeting spaces; shelter; and accessibility.

Impact

The impact of the recommendations is yet to be assessed.
